Ten minutes a month beats a perfect spreadsheet

I’ve started more budgets than I can count. Colour-coded spreadsheets. Apps that wanted every coffee logged. A notebook with good intentions in it. They all died the same way: I missed a few days, got behind, and quietly stopped.

The problem was never the tool. It was that they all needed a little bit of effort every single day, and real life doesn’t work like that. Some weeks you’re busy, tired or just not in the mood to think about money.

A budget you keep up with roughly is worth far more than a perfect one you abandon.

What actually stuck

What finally worked was flipping it round. Instead of tracking every penny as it went, I set up the things that repeat (pay, bills, standing orders, a rough weekly figure for spending) once. Then, once a month, I checked my real bank balance against what I expected it to be.

If it matched, brilliant. If it was a bit out, I corrected it and moved on. No guilt, no going back through receipts. Ten minutes, once a month, and my forecast stayed honest.

Why consistency matters more than detail

That’s why FoxxDen is built around a monthly check-in rather than daily logging. Set it up once, check in once a month, and spend the rest of your time actually living.
